High corn rootworm beetle risks continue in the forecast across much of the corn-growing region from northeast Colorado into Kansas, Nebraska, South and North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, lower Michigan, and into southern Ontario, Canada. Beetle populations may reach economic thresholds in some areas, with the greatest risk being silk clipping especially in corn fields with fresh silks. Growers with corn at a susceptible stage to fresh silk clipping and those fields located in areas where corn rootworms have historically been an issue, or those with continuous corn, should especially scout fields and take note of any beetle populations and changes in population. Even if counts are not at economic thresholds, it will be important to monitor populations not only for the present crop but also for planning ahead to next year’s planting decisions.
