Alert Details

As the annual western bean cutworm flight increases this growing season so does the aerial extent and risk level in the forecast. Low western bean cutworm risks extend from northeast Colorado and southwest Nebraska northeast into Iowa, far southeast South Dakota, southern Minnesota, southern and central Wisconsin, far northern Illinois, northern Indiana, lower Michigan, northern Ohio, and southern Ontario, Canada as well as into northwest Pennsylvania and upstate New York in the next week. Moderate risks are also in the forecast later this week in the usual “hot spots” the past few years where trap captures and egg deposition have been the highest, mainly across portions of Nebraska and also northern Indiana. Additional risks are anticipated in the latter half of July as more corn tassels further to the north and flights increase. Growers are advised to monitor traps in local fields as western bean cutworms are hit and miss, and some fields may not see pressure while others not terribly far away may see some problems that might warrant attention and action.
