Alert Details

Western bean cutworm peak flights continue especially in areas north of I-80 as heat unit accumulations reach and exceed critical emergence thresholds. The greatest risk area in the next five days stretches from South Dakota into Minnesota, Wisconsin, and lower Michigan as well as into northern Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, Canada.

Trap counts are showing decreasing trends from Nebraska into Iowa and Illinois which indicates the peak flight has occurred in these regions. Therefore, the risk levels have been reduced or even removed in some cases. Growers should, however, continue to monitor for egg masses and new hatches in addition to fresh larvae affecting corn ears.
