Black Cutworm
Two weather systems will impact portions of the corn-growing region in the next two to three days, and each respective system has the potential to result in black cutworm migration especially in the eastern half or so of the corn-growing region. The greatest area of concern for later today into early tomorrow morning is roughly along and east of the I-55 corridor in far southeast Missouri northward into central and eastern Illinois and points east where a Moderate risk is in place. This is a little further west than yesterday’s forecast and is ahead of a potent low pressure system and cold front moving into the Great Lakes region. Tomorrow into Saturday is a wash, rinse, repeat process but with everything occurring a little further to the west and also later in the day and into the overnight. The results are the Moderate risk migration area is also further west, including portions of Missouri, eastern Iowa, and also into southern Wisconsin and points east to near I-75. While there are little to no crops at risk at this point, these early moths can be the harbingers for new generations once we do have emerging crops in a month or so. Little to no migration risk is predicted after Saturday into at least early next week.
