Black Cutworm
Moderate black cutworm migration risks remain in the forecast tonight into tomorrow across portions of the corn-growing region ahead of a cold front. The Moderate risk area includes portions of Missouri, far eastern Iowa, extreme southeast Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, southern lower Michigan, western and central Ohio, and portions of northern Kentucky. South to southwest winds are likely to focus in this region, and while precipitation may become a factor especially on the western edge of the risk, some moth flights are still expected in this region. Overall, wind flow may become a little weaker and also more of the central/eastern corn-growing region may see precipitation by later tomorrow into tomorrow night, so Low risks are predicted mainly east of the Mississippi River. A stronger system will begin to take shape across the Plains states by Thursday, and Moderate risks are renewed especially along/west of the I-35 corridor Thursday night into Friday, with these risks then shifting east with a more progressive cold front mainly along/east of I-35 to the I-69 corridor by Friday night into Saturday. Once this front moves through, cooler and drier conditions are likely, along with north to northwest winds which will largely end any migration risk by Saturday. Growers are encouraged to continue to monitor traps as numerous flights have already been documented in the last month and additional flights are probable in the coming days.
