Black Cutworm
Another active weather week is expected across a large portion of the corn-growing region with no less than two separate weather systems predicted to impact the area. The second of the two later in the week will be the strongest and also carry the most risk for black cutworm migration. Before that point, however, Low migration risks are predicted tonight into tomorrow mainly from Kansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky as far north as southeast South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and southern lower Michigan as a broad area of fairly weak to moderate south to southwest winds sets up, with origination in western Texas. The overall pattern is not as favorable as last week for more widespread migration; thus, just a Low risk is predicted. By late in the week, however, stronger winds in association with a rather deep area of low pressure in the far northern Plains or southern Canada results in Moderate migration risks extending across the eastern Plains and western corn-growing region as far north as southeast North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin Wednesday night into Thursday. The risk extends as far east as southwest lower Michigan and Indiana by Thursday night into Friday as a cold front moves southeast. Growers need to continue to monitor traps and document when and where flights are occurring for the possibility of new generations impacting newly-emerged corn next month.
