Black Cutworm
Black cutworm risks will be on the increase once again heading into later tomorrow and especially tomorrow night into Thursday as a strong storm system develops across the northern High Plains. This promises to be another windy system like so many this spring have been. The result will be a rather expansive area of Moderate black cutworm migration risks beginning later tomorrow and lasting into Friday until a cold front passes through much of the corn-growing region. The initial Moderate risk is found along/west of I-35 and also includes western Wisconsin, and notably as far north as southeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. The risk then spreads east later Thursday into Friday as the cold front moves east, with best chances focused from southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, and Kentucky northeast into the southern Great Lakes region. Little to no risk is predicted for the weekend and likely into at least early next week, as well, but growers should continue trap monitoring and even some early scouting in newly-emerged fields as numerous black cutworm moth flights have been documented this spring.
