Alert Details

Black cutworm migration risks return to the forecast Thursday night into Friday as a low pressure system develops in southern Canada with a trailing cold front southward into the Plains states. Southerly winds will increase to the east of this feature, and isolated black cutworm moth flights will be possible especially from Kansas and Missouri as far north as eastern South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The risk area is focused a little further east than yesterday’s forecast owing to a potentially faster-moving system. Low risks continue in the forecast Friday night into Saturday mainly along/east of the Mississippi River as this front moves east. Additional risks may be possible later in the weekend and early next week, as well, as a potentially more active weather pattern returns to the corn-growing region. Growers are encouraged to continue to monitor traps but more importantly, scout newly-emerged corn fields for signs of black cutworm damage and larvae especially in areas where flights were documented last month.
