Black Cutworm
As the corn-growing region weather pattern becomes more active in the coming days to week, the corresponding black cutworm migration risks will also increase. A couple of weather systems are likely to impact at least a portion, if not all, of the corn-growing region in the next five days. The first system moves through later tomorrow into Saturday, and Low migration risks are predicted tomorrow night into Friday especially focused on a corridor from Kansas and Missouri north into Minnesota and Wisconsin. Low risks then focus along/east of the I-55 corridor Friday night into Saturday as the first cold front moves through. Quickly on the heels of this first system, however, will be the second and likely stronger system. Southwesterly flow will begin to dominate the overall corn-growing region weather pattern especially for the eastern 2/3 to 3/4 of the region, much like we saw in early-mid April this year. The result will be persistent black cutworm migration risks, although at the present time risks are being kept in the Low category still given some forecast uncertainty. Growers are encouraged to continue to monitor traps but also regularly scout newly-emerged corn fields, looking for signs of larvae and/or black cutworm damage.
