Alert Details

An active corn-growing region weather pattern is anticipated into early next week, and the result will be nightly black cutworm migration risks which now include Moderate risks in the Sunday night into Monday and Monday night into Tuesday time period. Two separate weather systems are expected to move through the region, with the first bringing a Low risk corridor from Kansas and Missouri north as far as southeast South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin tonight into tomorrow morning. The Low risk then shifts east with a cold front from Missouri northeast into the southern Great Lakes tomorrow night into Saturday. The front is not expected to pass through the entire southern corn-growing region, but will return as a warm front later Saturday into Sunday and Low migration risks with the second system are already in place especially west of the Mississippi River but especially in the Plains states. The second system should really gain strength on Sunday, and as it does, south to southwest winds are expected to increase throughout the day Sunday and Moderate migration risks are now predicted Sunday night into Monday across portions of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana, with the Moderate risk then shifting east into portions of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan Monday night into Tuesday. Growers should continue scouting efforts in newly-emerged corn fields, and trap monitoring needs to persist in all areas but especially those that are lagging in planting progress or where corn has not yet emerged as these new flights may produce generations that could cause damage late this month or into June.
