A very active weather pattern is expected across the corn-growing region through the early to middle part of next week, keeping nightly black cutworm migration risks in the forecast. Elevated Moderate risk are in the forecast both Sunday night and Monday night as a favorable pattern for migration sets up across a portion of the corn-growing region. Low risks are predicted tonight into tomorrow from Kansas and Missouri northeast as far as southeast Minnesota and southern Wisconsin and east as far as Indiana and western Kentucky. Low risks then focus mainly along/west of the Mississippi River tomorrow night into Sunday morning as a strong storm system develops in the central Plains states. Moderate migration risks then enter the forecast Sunday night into Monday across portions of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois and these risks continue in the forecast across virtually the same area Monday night into Tuesday, but also further east into lower Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. The cold front looks to get a push by Tuesday into Wednesday, but as the system gets weaker by that time, so will the subsequent south to southwest wind speeds so only Low risks are predicted across the eastern corn-growing region Tuesday night into Wednesday. Still, with a multi-day threat over a pretty large area and also corn emerging at a higher percentage every day, growers should scout those fields but also continue to pay attention to traps for new moth flights, especially in areas where planting may be lagging.
