Black Cutworm
Low pressure is expected to develop across the western Plains states late in the weekend and eventually drag a cold front through much of the corn-growing region by mid-week next week. A period of rather stout southerly winds is anticipated to the east of the cold front – initially across the Plains states late Sunday into Monday, then spreading east to Lake Michigan and Illinois by Monday night and Tuesday, and finally focusing mainly in the southern Great Lakes and eastern corn-growing region by Tuesday night and Wednesday next week. Low risks are predicted in the aforementioned areas each night. Growers with newly-emerged corn are encouraged to actively scout fields given the greater than average number of moth flights experienced this spring in many areas of the corn-growing region, and be prepared to scout well into June (or until the crop advances in growth past critical stages where damage no longer occurs) given the historic late planting and re-planting situation currently ongoing in the corn-growing region.
