Alert Details

As the weather pattern shifts from a dominant northwest flow to more southwesterly by this weekend into next week, black cutworm migration risks will make a return to the forecast. South to southwest winds are expected to commence across the Plains late week and then spread east. Low black cutworm migration risks are predicted Saturday night into Sunday from Kansas and Missouri north as far as southern Minnesota and Wisconsin with the Low risks spreading east into Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky Sunday night into Monday. This initial system does not look all that impressive for widespread flights but nonetheless enough wind to warrant a Low risk. With an increasing amount of corn now emerging and into early vegetative growth stages, growers are encouraged to scout fields for signs of black cutworm larvae and take appropriate action, if necessary, based on specific field conditions.
