Alert Details

Black cutworm migration risks remain in the forecast for the next 24 hours or so as low pressure is expected to churn over the central Plains states today before rapidly weakening and moving off to the east by later in the weekend and early next week. Southerly to southeasterly wind flow east of the low pressure may result in some isolated moth flights in portions of far eastern Kansas, Missouri, and southern Illinois as far north as Minnesota and Wisconsin through midday tomorrow. Thereafter, a prolonged period of dominant northwest flow is expected and little, if any, migration risk is predicted through at least mid-week next week. Growers are advised to scout fields as many areas are very close to cutting dates based on heat unit accumulations from flights in early-mid April now, and with corn emerging in many areas any threat to this year’s crop may be imminent.
