Alert Details

The active weather pattern is expected to continue across much of the corn-growing region once again this week. The result will be additional black cutworm migration risks especially in the latter portion of the week, again across mainly the southeastern two-thirds to three-quarters of the region. Low migration risks are in the forecast as early as Wednesday night and into Thursday from Kansas as far north as Minnesota and east into the western Great Lakes, with the primary risk by late week mainly near and east of the Mississippi River. It is likely that elevated risks will be needed again by late week for this next system. Growers are encouraged to continue to regularly check traps and monitor intense flights/heat unit accumulations as multiple flights have likely occurred in the past several weeks with additional flights possible in the next week. Variable planting dates may lead to different black cutworm pressure levels over the next several weeks, so growers should stay alert to flights and heat unit accumulations in their specific, local area, as well as plant growth stage once corn does emerge this spring.
