Alert Details

Black cutworm migration risks are in the forecast once again for early next week as another weather system moves through the whole of the corn-growing region. Low migration risks initially begin mainly west of the US 65 corridor from Missouri into Iowa and Minnesota Sunday night into Monday before spreading east to the southwestern Great Lakes area Monday night into Tuesday and then further east yet by Tuesday night into Wednesday when a cold front pushes east and likely brings down some cooler air by that time on northwest flow. Several documented black cutworm moth flights have occurred in the corn-growing region in the past week or two, and with more emerged corn present in some areas, growers should not only be checking traps and monitoring heat unit accumulations from significant flight dates, but also scouting those emerged fields especially in areas where flights were observed in April.
