Black Cutworm
Low black cutworm risks return to the forecast Sunday night and last into mid-week next week as another potentially strong low pressure system moves through the corn-growing region. Southerly winds are expected to increase especially by Sunday from the Plains east to near the western Great Lakes region, and Low risks focus in this area Sunday night into Monday. An expansion of the Low risk area east is then predicted by Monday into Tuesday as a cold front begins to move to the east. This system will be monitored over the weekend as we could potentially see an elevated migration risk with this system especially given some planting delays occurring in some areas. Growers are encouraged to continue to monitor traps, scout fields, and watch heat unit accumulations as black cutworm damage may be ongoing or imminent depending on location and crop stage.
