Black Cutworm
A potent low pressure system and attendant cold front are both expected to move southeast through the corn-growing region over the next 24-36 hours. East of the front, south to southwest winds are likely to be gusty and with precipitation generally limited especially east of the Mississippi River, the chance is there for scattered black cutworm moth flights to occur especially from mid-south source regions northeast into the eastern portion of the corn-growing region. Moderate black cutworm migration risks are predicted from eastern Illinois into Indiana, northern Kentucky, Ohio, lower Michigan, and into southern Ontario, Canada with a Low risk for areas not in the Moderate risk primarily east of a line from near Springfield, Missouri to north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Little, if any, additional migration risk is predicted after tomorrow, but growers should continue scouting and trapping efforts especially given the increasing percentage of emerged corn now present and at critical growth stages for this particular insect.
