Black Cutworm
A strong storm system is predicted to move through the corn-growing region over the next 36-48 hours. South to southwest winds will become quite gusty to the east of a cold front trailing south from low pressure in the central Plains, and may pose a scattered black cutworm migration risk especially from Missouri and Iowa east into southern Wisconsin, Illinois, and western Indiana where a Moderate risk is predicted tonight into tomorrow. As the front moves east, south to southwest winds will continue but the insect source region will be in a less favorable location further east along the Mississippi River and winds will not be quite as strong and may be contaminated with rainfall/thunderstorms, so only a Low migration risk is mainly predicted to the east of the I-55 corridor in the southern Great Lakes and eastern corn-growing region tomorrow night into Thursday. Little to no migration risk is predicted after midday Thursday into the weekend and early next week, but growers should be advised that it is probable that black cutworms may already be present in some areas, especially along/east of the Mississippi River given several recent very strong weather systems. Should those black cutworms have found a suitable host and can survive, potential problems may arise sooner rather than later this spring.
