Black Cutworm
A strong spring storm system is likely to bring the next appreciable black cutworm migration event into the corn-growing region this weekend and into early next week. South to southwest winds will increase as we move through the weekend from west to east as high pressure drifts into the southeastern United States. Low migration risks are found initially tomorrow night into Sunday mainly west of the Mississippi River, but we have introduced Moderate risks to the forecast for Sunday night into Monday from northeast Kansas and eastern Nebraska as far east as Wisconsin and Illinois. Moderate risks continue in the forecast Monday night into Tuesday especially from Illinois and Wisconsin to the east as a cold front begins to advance to the southeast by that time. Some location tweaks are likely as we head into Monday’s forecast, but growers all across the corn-growing region should be prepared for the potential for new black cutworm moths to appear in the next week.
