Alert Details

Black cutworm migration risks return to the forecast by Wednesday night into Thursday as low pressure deepens in the northern Plains region and a cold front begins to move southeast through the corn-growing region. Low migration risks are currently predicted from central Kansas, eastern Nebraska, and southern/central Minnesota as far east as lower Michigan, western Ohio, and central Kentucky by midday Thursday. The overall setup is favorable for some migration but likely not widespread risks, thus the Low risk in the forecast at this time. Risks may need to be extended further east Thursday night into Friday if the cold front slows down. Growers should be scouting newly-emerged fields especially in the eastern two-thirds or so of the corn-growing region as flights that occurred in April may now be producing new generations/larvae that may be damaging crops especially where flights were more intense.
