Alert Details

A brief northwest flow pattern behind a departing cold front limits the corn earworm migration risk for the next few days, but a return to southerly flow and very warm/hot conditions and increasing moisture will lead to a widespread but likely somewhat limited impact corn earworm migration risk later in the weekend and into next week. Southerly winds are expected to increase later Saturday initially west of the Great Lakes but eventually much of the corn-growing region should be in a warm to hot weather pattern with gusty south to southwest winds by late in the weekend and into next week, as well. Broad Low migration risks are predicted during this time across a large portion of the corn-growing region, and considering some fresh market and garden growers may have crops at susceptible stages to corn earworm damage, a Moderate risk is being considered but we will hold off for the time being to gain better confidence in where the best placement for an elevated risk may be especially early next week. There are already several reports of corn earworm populations in scattered portions of the corn-growing region, so growers should be advised and on the look-out once crops near or enter into critical growth stages.
