Corn Earworm
A couple opportunities for corn earworm migration exist in the next week, with the first being tonight into tomorrow mainly from Kansas, Missouri, and western Kentucky northward as far as eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and far southwestern lower Michigan. A cold front is expected to move southeast through this area late tonight and especially tomorrow, and south to southwest winds are likely east of the front which may lead to some primarily isolated moth flights. A break is then anticipated until later in the week and weekend with the next system. Low risks focus mainly west of the Great Lakes Thursday night into Friday, and then further east into the southern Great Lakes and central/eastern corn-growing region Friday night into Saturday as the next cold front moves through. Growers with crops at susceptible stages to damage, especially fresh market and garden growers, but some very early planted field and sweet corn in some areas may be entering critical growth phases now, as well, so these fields should also be monitored. Some scattered moth flights have been observed in the past few weeks with recent weather events so corn earworm moths are present in the corn-growing region.
