Corn Earworm
Corn earworm migration risks return to the forecast late Thursday into Friday mainly west of the Great Lakes as another low pressure system develops in the northern Plains states. Southerly winds originating in Texas and Oklahoma may lead to some isolated moth flights as far north as South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin that night. Low risks then shift southeast as a cold front pushes east, with the Low risk area primarily along and east of the Mississippi River by Friday night into Saturday. The somewhat quick-moving nature of this front precludes higher risks at this time due to an expected short residence time of favorable southerly winds to allow more widespread migration. Growers with crops at or near sensitive stages of growth where corn earworms may cause damage should continue to monitor traps and scout those fields as numerous flights have been observed in the past few weeks.
