Corn Earworm
Corn earworm migration risks will be on the increase and become more frequent in the coming week as an active weather pattern returns to much of the corn-growing region. Low pressure is expected to develop in the High Plains or even into southern Canada over the next day or so, and southerly winds are likely to increase initially across the Plains states tonight into tomorrow before expanding and likely increasing further east by this weekend and into early next week. Low risks are predicted tonight into tomorrow mainly across Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, western Minnesota, western Iowa, and far northwest Missouri. Low risks then expand as far east as Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri tomorrow night into Saturday, and then across much of the remainder of the corn-growing region the remainder of the weekend and into early next week as a cold front begins to move southeast. We have also introduced a Moderate risk to the forecast across portions of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois especially on Sunday night into Monday for a combination of a potential corridor of stronger south to southwest winds and also more precipitation moving into the area resulting in a higher risk for insect drop-out near organized storm lines and clusters. With a maturing corn crop in the southern states and mid-south region, corn earworms will begin moving north in larger numbers in the coming weeks and higher risks are warranted given this and also more crops at a susceptible stage to potential corn earworm damage in the corn-growing region now.
