Corn Earworm
Moderate corn earworm migration risks are in the forecast tonight into tomorrow across a pretty large portion of the northern corn-growing region from far southeast Minnesota into Iowa, northern and central Illinois, Wisconsin, northern and central Indiana and Ohio, much of lower Michigan, and east into southern Ontario, Canada. A favorable setup for both short and longer-distance corn earworm migration risks will continue later this evening into tomorrow morning across this area, and growers should be advised that conditions were also favorable for scattered moth flights in some of these same areas over the weekend, as well (especially west of Lake Michigan). A cold front is expected to push somewhat slowly south later Tuesday into Wednesday, with Low risks continuing mainly east of I-55 and Lake Michigan tomorrow night into Wednesday. Low risks envelop much of the corn-growing region from late Wednesday into Thursday (risks mainly west of the Mississippi River) and then Thursday night into Friday further east as another bout of at least southerly winds may lead to shorter-distance migration ahead of a weak cool front. Fresh market and processing growers should continue to check traps and scout fields as some moth flights have been observed in the past week or so and we expect a continued increase in both traps catching moths but also more intense captures/flights especially with the passage of the current weather system.
