Corn Earworm
Low corn earworm migration risks will continue in the forecast on a nightly basis into the weekend as a cold front moves east through the corn-growing region. Initially, Low risks are predicted mainly across the Plains states tonight where the best corridor for southerly winds will exist. Low risks then expand east tomorrow night into Friday, and reach as far as Wisconsin and Illinois as the cold front begins moving southeast. Finally, by Friday night into Saturday, the cold front should be moving into the Great Lakes and Mississippi River valley, focusing any lingering migration risk across the southern Great Lakes and into the southeastern corn-growing region. While some isolated moth flights are anticipated over the next several days, the overall weaker southerly wind flow pattern and rather short duration of these winds at any given location precludes any higher risk at this time. Growers, however, should continue scouting and trapping efforts as we may begin to see some new generations from flights late last month. A higher percentage of both field and fresh market/processing crops in susceptible stages to damage may be impacted by these new generations.
