Alert Details

A continued active weather pattern in the next week leads to near nightly risks of corn earworm migration, including a couple of nights of Moderate (elevated) risks focused on tomorrow night into Wednesday and also Wednesday night into Thursday. Low risks are predicted mainly west of the Great Lakes tonight into tomorrow as low pressure organizes in southern Canada and southerly winds increase in this region. Moderate risks then focus across northeast Nebraska, far southeast South Dakota, southern Minnesota, northern and central Iowa, northwest Illinois, and southwestern Wisconsin for tomorrow night into Wednesday as a focused corridor of decent south to southwest winds sets up. This corridor of flight-level winds continues Wednesday night into Thursday but focused just a little further east, with Moderate risks found from northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota east into southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois, northern Indiana, and southwest lower Michigan. Risks do appear to drop off for late week as this first front moves through at least a portion of the area, but we may already be looking at additional migration risks by next weekend. Growers all across the corn-growing region are advised to monitor traps and crops closely as we have already seen higher than average flights in several areas this year, a little earlier than the usual early-mid August flights more common in northern fields. Those flights may well still occur, further potentially resulting in even higher pressure/moth presence in some areas.
