Alert Details

Corn earworm migration risks remain in the forecast on a nightly basis through early next week as a rather persistent weather pattern remains across the corn-growing region. A weak cool front will move southeast into the Great Lakes and portions of the central corn-growing region later today into tonight, and should focus any migration risks to the southeastern portion of the corn-growing region southeast of a line from near Wichita, Kansas to Chicago, Illinois. This front, however, is likely to dissipate or return north as a warm front later tomorrow, with southerly winds already present in the Plains and further east to near Lake Michigan by tomorrow night. Low risks are found west of Lake Michigan tomorrow night into Saturday, with these risks then enveloping largely the whole of the corn-growing region for late in the weekend and into early next week. We do anticipate enhanced/elevated risks once again by as early as the weekend or early next week ahead of a cold front, but there are still some details to work out before these risks are upgraded. Growers all across the corn-growing region are encouraged to monitor traps and scout vulnerable fields for corn earworms as numerous flights have been documented and we may be dealing with new generations from flights a month ago coinciding with new moth flights now in some areas.
