Alert Details

Corn earworm migration risks are on the increase given an expected more favorable weather pattern for the rest of this week and likely into the weekend, as well. Low pressure is expected to continue to develop in the High Plains region while high pressure drifts off into the eastern United States. In between, the result will be increasing southerly winds which may bring isolated to even scattered moth flights north into the corn-growing region. Mid-south and southern states crops are becoming less attractive corn earworm hosts, and moths in these areas will be more apt to flying north to find better food sources. As a result, migration risks are more aggressive and Low risks are in place mainly west of Lake Michigan tonight, with risks as far north as eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota predicted. Moderate risks are then in the forecast tomorrow night into Thursday across portions of South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois as a decent corridor of south to southwest winds begins to set up west of Lake Michigan. This Moderate risk area continues in the forecast Thursday night into Friday just east of the Day 2 Moderate risk area, with the Moderate risk eventually spreading into lower Michigan, far northwest Ohio, and Indiana by the weekend. Growers should continue scouting and trapping efforts, and prepare for the possibility of potential new moth flights over the next week.
