Alert Details

A cold front is expected to push southeast through much of the corn-growing region by Wednesday this week. Before the front moves through, however, a decent corridor of south to southwest winds is expected especially from the mid-south region northeast into the eastern corn-growing region and southern Great Lakes tonight into tomorrow. Moderate corn earworm migration risks are predicted mainly along/east of I-57 in eastern Illinois into this region, with Low risks for more isolated flights east of the cold front to the west. Northwest to westerly winds are expected at least for a brief time after this front moves through later Tuesday into Wednesday, so little to no migration risk is in the forecast later tomorrow into early Wednesday. The break, however, will be short-lived as yet another storm system begins to organize in the Plains states. Southerly winds are likely to return to the Plains states by Wednesday and continue through the rest of the week while expanding east once again. Low risks are predicted across the corn-growing region west of Lake Michigan by late week and into next weekend, and we fully expect elevated risks to be issued, once again, by mid-week once confidence in precipitation placement becomes a little clearer. Growers are encouraged to regularly check traps and scout fields as some flights may have occurred in the past several days, and new generations from flights earlier in the growing season may also be present in some areas, as well.
