Corn Earworm
After a brief break in the heat/humidity and southerly wind flow tonight into tomorrow as a weak cool front moves through much of the corn-growing region, we already see southerly winds return to the Plains states by tomorrow night into Thursday as the next weather system develops in southern Canada. Low corn earworm migration risks have been introduced to the forecast during that time mainly west of I-35 and as far north as near the Canadian border in North Dakota. The Low risk then shifts or expands eastward only very slowly, as high pressure in the Ohio River valley may be pretty stubborn to move east very quickly. As a result, we are keeping Low migration risks mainly west of Lake Michigan and the I-57 corridor in eastern Illinois in the forecast from Thursday night right into the weekend. We do anticipate an elevated risk in the forecast west of Lake Michigan by late in the week or next weekend, but would like to see a little more confidence in placement until we upgrade portions of the corn-growing region.
