Alert Details

Corn earworm migration risks will be on the increase over the next several days as southerly winds increase and remain rather persistent over the same areas for several days/nights in a row. High pressure across the eastern corn-growing region is expected to only slowly move to the east this weekend, so the primary corn earworm migration risk will remain mainly west of Lake Michigan. By late in the weekend and early next week, however, enough movement to the east will result in elevated risks pushing into portions of the southern Great Lakes and eastern corn-growing region, as well. Low risks are predicted mainly west of Lake Michigan and the I-55 corridor tonight into tomorrow, with Moderate risks then in place from southeast South Dakota and eastern Nebraska east into southern Minnesota, Iowa, northern Missouri, southwest Wisconsin, and western Illinois as southerly winds increase tomorrow night into Saturday. This Moderate risk will remain in the forecast into early next week with greatest concern across portions of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, but also eventually further east into Indiana and southwest lower Michigan. A weak cold front is expected to push south through at least a portion of the corn-growing region by next Tuesday or Wednesday, but before that point corn earworm migration risks will remain in the forecast. Growers are encouraged to continue trapping and scouting efforts as long as crops are at a vulnerable stage to corn earworm damage.
