Alert Details

Corn earworm migration risks will continue in the forecast on a nightly basis right into early next week until a cold front passes through the corn-growing region. South to southwest winds along with very warm to hot conditions for this time of year may lead to at least isolated moth flights into remaining processing and fresh market fields especially west of Lake Michigan tonight into tomorrow, with a slight nudge east to the overall risk area tomorrow night into Friday expected, potentially into southwest lower Michigan and Indiana. By later in the weekend and early next week, the rather stagnant weather pattern is expected to become more progressive, and a cold front should enter the northwest corn-growing region by that time and then push southeast by mid-week. Low risks persist east of this front, and we will need to monitor for the potential of risk upgrades again for processing companies and fresh market growers that intentionally planted crops later as these crops would especially be vulnerable to potential impacts given they are the only game in town left. Once this front moves through, that should effectively end or greatly limit the migration risk by mid-late next week.
