Corn Earworm
Corn earworm risks will continue in the forecast right into next week as a very persistent weather pattern remains in place across the corn-growing region. The risk area will focus further to the east with time, especially as a cold front begins to move southeast through the area by early-mid next week. Low risks are predicted mainly from far eastern Kansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky north as far as Minnesota and Wisconsin tonight into tomorrow. The risk then shifts a little further to the east tomorrow night into Saturday, with any remaining processing and fresh market fields as far east as southwest lower Michigan and Indiana at risk. As the cold front takes shape and begins moving southeast by late in the weekend early next week, the primary risk area will begin to focus more across the southeastern corn-growing region, especially along/east of the Mississippi River and into the southern Great Lakes area. There is still a possibility of increased risks in a portion of the corn-growing region by early next week, and processing/fresh market growers are encouraged to continue to monitor traps and scout fields as there have been some observed corn earworm moth flights in the past week in the corn-growing region.
