Alert Details

As a strong area of low pressure develops across the central Plains states this weekend and moves northeast into southern Canada by early next week, south to southwest winds may result in at least isolated corn earworm migration events. The risk area is focused especially from Kansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, and Kentucky and points north and east as far as southeast Minnesota, Wisconsin, lower Michigan, and even into southern Ontario, Canada by late in the weekend and early next week ahead of a cold front. While there is little threat to any crops at this point, these early migrating moths may find suitable hosts in some areas and future generations may cause some damage especially to earliest planted or maturing crops and garden plants. Corn earworms have already been observed in scattered portions of the corn-growing region this spring, likely owing to the active weather pattern seen as early as late March but especially into April, so growers are encouraged to remain vigilant once crops and gardens really begin to take off in the coming weeks with expected warmer temperatures.
