A seasonably strong cold front is likely to pass through much of the corn-growing region by the end of the week. Before the front passes, however, south to southwest winds to its east will pose a risk for corn earworm migration tonight into tomorrow especially west of Lake Michigan and the I-57 corridor in eastern Illinois, and also as far north as extreme southeast North Dakota and portions of adjacent northern Minnesota. The Low risk area shifts southeast tomorrow night into Thursday as the front moves east, and focuses mainly southeast of a line from near Wichita, Kansas to east of Des Moines, Iowa, and east/northeast into southern/eastern Wisconsin. While most field and sweet corn crops are not at a susceptible stage to corn earworm damage at this point, this will be changing as we head into the latter portions of the month and the moths that arrive now may find garden and other fresh market hosts and produce subsequent generations that will have a chance of affecting crops on a more widespread basis later in the growing season. Trapping will be important even at this point in the crop’s growth stage.
