Corn earworm risks are in the forecast from later Saturday right into at least early next week as a rather stagnant weather pattern featuring low pressure in the High Plains and southern Canada and high pressure in the southern Appalachian Mountain region or even the southeastern corn-growing region remain largely in place for several days. Southerly winds will be common and will increase throughout the weekend and into early next week, with strongest winds likely remaining west of Lake Michigan. Low corn earworm migration risks are initially predicted west of Lake Michigan Saturday night into Sunday, but do expand eastward into the southern Great Lakes and eastern corn-growing region by early next week. An upgrade to a Moderate risk is possible for a portion of the corn-growing region given the persistent and favorable weather pattern expected and also a higher percentage of fresh market and processing crops are now entering into critical growth stages, and some earliest planted field corn is also tasseling in some areas, warranting higher risks when prudent.
