A very favorable weather pattern for corn earworm migration across a large portion of the corn-growing region is expected to continue the rest of this week and potentially into the upcoming holiday weekend, as well. Moderate risks are in the forecast on a nightly basis right into the weekend. The overall general theme of the weather pattern is a persistent area of high pressure across the east central United States and low pressure initially across southern Canada but by late week, low pressure will likely reorganize across the central Plains. Eventually, a cold front will likely move southeast through much of the corn-growing region, but this may not occur until the holiday weekend or even early next week. Persistent south to southwest winds in between the pressure centers will result in the possibility of corn earworm migration especially from Texas source regions. Moderate risks are found across portions of Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan at the start of the forecast period tonight into tomorrow, but will with time expand east further into southeast lower Michigan and also Ohio. With a higher percentage of the crop at a susceptible stage to corn earworm damage, including more and more field corn especially in central and southern areas, all growers from field corn to fresh market, processing, and garden growers need to monitor traps and scout their fields or gardens as corn earworms will likely appear in some areas in the next week or so as we move through this hot/humid weather pattern for many.
