Prospects for increased corn earworm flights and trap captures will increase as we head into the end of this week and into next weekend, and likely beyond as a return to an active weather pattern across the corn-growing region takes place. At this point in the growing season, we are more concerned with fresh market and processing growers that have intentionally later planted crops still at susceptible stages to corn earworm damage, and these growers should prepare now for increases in flight captures and potential corn earworm pressure in the coming weeks. Low risks are in the forecast beginning later Friday and continue into the weekend, and are initially focused west of Lake Michigan Friday into Saturday, but then expand east into the Great Lakes and eastern corn-growing region by the weekend. Moderate risks are forthcoming to the forecast in the next day or two, and most major growing areas from Minnesota and Iowa east into the Great Lakes are likely to be included in the elevated risks at some point by next weekend. It is possible that additional risks are likely beyond next weekend, as well, so again growers with crops still sensitive to corn earworm pressure should begin preparations now for additional flights in the coming week or two!
