A significant weather pattern change is expected later this week, one that should bring increasing late summer heat and humidity on gusty south to southwest winds to at least a portion of the corn-growing region for the next week or so. The result will be subsequent increases in corn earworm migration risks beginning as early as tomorrow into Saturday but more so over the weekend and into early next week as a cold front begins to work southeast into at least a portion of the area. Low risks are initially focused west of Lake Michigan tomorrow night into Saturday, but Moderate risks have been introduced to the forecast by later Saturday into Sunday especially west of Lake Michigan in the northern corn-growing region where fresh market and processing crops, most notably, may still be at risk of corn earworm damage from Minnesota into Iowa and Wisconsin as well as northern and central Illinois. Moderate risks then expand east into lower Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio by late in the weekend and early next week as the cold front settles a little further southeast. Additional risks are likely beyond early next week and may last right into the Labor Day weekend until a cooler weather pattern takes over either during the holiday weekend or the following week. Growers with crops susceptible to corn earworm damage should prepare now for new moth flights in the coming week or so.
