Corn earworm migration risks will be on the increase as we turn the weather pattern into a much more active one across much of the corn-growing region for the foreseeable future. South to southwest winds will already increase and may spread some corn earworms into areas mainly west of Lake Michigan tonight into tomorrow. As high pressure in the eastern corn-growing region moves into the eastern United States and eventually out over the Atlantic Ocean, fields in the central and eastern corn-growing and Great Lakes regions will also get in on the risks, with Moderate risks focusing west of Lake Michigan tomorrow night into Sunday morning, and then across the southern Great Lakes and portions of the eastern corn-growing region later Sunday and into early next week. Over time, the better risk will focus further and further east, so by early next week prospects for moth migration will be highest in the Great Lakes region. We encourage growers with crops at susceptible stages to corn earworm damage, especially fresh market and processing growers, that new corn earworm moth flights are likely to occur across a large portion of the corn-growing region especially along/east of I-35 in the next week. Preparations for the anticipation for new moth arrivals should begin now if not already. Migration risks could potentially last in the forecast as far out as the Labor Day weekend before a pattern change occurs sometime then or the following week so this is not expected to be a one-and-done event this weekend and early next week.
