Moderate corn earworm migration risks are predicted tonight into tomorrow morning across portions of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Illinois as a weak cold front moves southeast, and a corridor of south to southwest winds sets up especially just to the west of Lake Michigan and into the upper Mississippi River valley. Of greatest concern at this point in the growing season is with fresh market and processing fields that still have crops at susceptible stages to corn earworm damage. Low risks continue in the forecast mainly west of Lake Michigan tomorrow night into Saturday as a new area of low pressure organizes in the High Plains and southern Canada. By later in the weekend and early next week, there is still some uncertainty but it does appear a stronger cold front may move through the corn-growing region around mid-week, and southerly winds could potentially be gusty at that time prior to the front passing through. We have Low migration risks from roughly I-69 in Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky westward at that time, and Moderate risks are probable closer to the event once confidence increases.
