After a brief break from corn earworm migration risks, Low risks are already back in the forecast by tomorrow night into Friday as the next low pressure system organizes in southern Canada. With high pressure moving into the Great Lakes by later Thursday, south to southwest winds will already be returning to the Plains and will become gusty at times, as well. Low risks seem prudent mainly along/west of the Mississippi River and also in western Wisconsin during this time. By Friday night into Saturday, high pressure moves further east into New England while the low pressure system deepens in Canada. A cold front will begin moving into the northern Plains by this time, and south to southwest winds are likely to continue and also expand eastward. Moderate migration risks are already in the forecast Friday night into Saturday across portions of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan with Low risks as far east as southern Ontario, Canada, Ohio, and Kentucky. This cold front may move fast enough to preclude much of any migration risk by Saturday night, but some risk may return to the Plains and southern corn-growing region by late in the weekend or early next week as the next system develops in the central Plains. We will revisit the late weekend and early next week risk in coming days as details are murky this far out.
