A continued active late summer and early fall weather pattern is expected to continue into next week and likely beyond as we begin to see a battle of warm air to the south and increasingly colder air from Canada to the north as days become shorter and the sun angle becomes lower. A couple of weather systems are of interest for corn earworm migration possibilities in the next five days. The first system will send a cold front through much of the corn-growing region Friday into Saturday, and Low migration risks ahead of this system are already in place tonight into tomorrow on increasing southerly winds mainly west of the Mississippi River but also including western Wisconsin. Moderate risks then enter the forecast tomorrow night into Saturday across portions of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan as the front continues southeast. The front is currently predicted to clear much of the eastern corn-growing region by late Saturday so little to no further risk seems warranted after midday Saturday. Low risks then return to much of the corn-growing region by Sunday and last into at least Tuesday next week as a seasonably strong low pressure system develops across the central Plains and eventually sends yet another cold front through the corn-growing region sometime mid-next week. There are some timing and placement issues to resolve especially as we head into next week, but Low migration risks are already in place for most fields along/south of I-90 west of Lake Michigan and also along/south of I-96 in lower Michigan beginning later Sunday and lasting into Tuesday next week. Fresh market and processing growers are encouraged to continue scouting and trapping efforts until harvest as some fields are still at risk.
