Moderate corn earworm migration risks are in the forecast tonight into tomorrow as a cold front moves through the corn-growing region. A fairly stout south to southwest wind east of the front in combination with several areas of precipitation near or even ahead of the front may lead to scattered moth flights and subsequent drop-out especially across portions of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and lower Michigan, with Low risks as far east as Kentucky, Ohio, and southern Ontario, Canada. This front moves through pretty quickly so little to no risk is predicted tomorrow night, but Low risks are already back in the forecast by later Sunday into Monday but mainly focused along the I-80 corridor and west of I-57 in eastern Illinois. There is still some uncertainty in what happens early-mid next week, but the general consensus and also looking at climatology, favors another cold front moving through fairly quickly by next Tuesday/Wednesday, and Low risks have been expanded north by Tuesday into early Wednesday into Minnesota, Wisconsin, and lower Michigan. We will revisit the early-mid week system on Monday and provide the latest update then, but in the meantime fresh market and processing growers need to continue their insect management programs until harvest.
