Corn rootworm hatch risks will continue to spread north and west in response to greater heat unit accumulations especially due to recent and ongoing above average temperatures in many areas. Virtually all of the corn-growing region will be included in at least a Moderate risk by next weekend, with more widespread and ongoing hatches especially prevalent from Kansas into eastern Nebraska, much of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, southern Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and into southern lower Michigan. More scattered or just commencing hatches are expected from western Kansas into eastern Colorado, central Nebraska, southeast South Dakota, southern Minnesota, western and southern Wisconsin, central lower Michigan, and into southern Ontario, Canada. Growers are encouraged to dig up roots and also, in more advanced fields, look for potential lodging or other signs of corn rootworm to determine local populations and any potential treatment actions, either for this year’s crop or for planning ahead for next year.
