Corn rootworm risks are beginning to become less of a concern across much of the corn-growing region as this growing season’s crop continues to advance in growth and out of critical growth stages where corn rootworms could be a potential issue to yield. Even if not a threat to yield, however, growers should continue to scout for a little while longer just to determine if any beetle populations are present as higher beetle populations may indicate a need for a change to next year’s planting intentions. Overall, however, the threat for this year’s crop is being reduced as evidenced by Moderate risks now mainly focused along/north of I-80 from northeast Colorado into northwest Kansas, Nebraska, the eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, northern Iowa, northern Illinois, Wisconsin, lower Michigan, and into far northern Indiana and Ohio as well as southern Ontario, Canada. Risks have been reduced into the Low risk or eliminated entirely south of the Moderate risk area, and continued reductions in both risk levels and areas at risk will follow in the next few weeks before the risk is removed entirely by mid-September.
