Corn Rootworm
Corn rootworm hatch is expected to continue in the next week especially in areas that have previously seen rootworm pressure in the past few years. The risk area extends from Kansas, northern Missouri, central/southern Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio northward as far as northeast South Dakota, central Minnesota and Wisconsin, and also into central lower Michigan and southwest Ontario, Canada by late this week and into next weekend. Recent warm to very hot temperatures and adequate but not excessive rains should lead to more optimal conditions for recently hatched corn rootworms to survive compared to the past few years. Growers in or near the hatch risk area that have experienced problems with rootworms in recent years should dig up corn and soybean roots and evaluate larvae populations to assess the potential threat to crops.
