Soybean Aphid
As a higher percentage of the soybean crop enters into the reproductive stages of growth, so will the chance of locally higher soybean aphid populations potentially causing damage especially with favorable weather in the next few weeks. Initially, Low development/population risks are in place from eastern South Dakota into southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, central and southern Wisconsin, lower Michigan, and also further east into southern Ontario, Canada. By the end of this week, we have introduced Moderate risks across northern Iowa and southern Minnesota where a better chance, and past history, suggests the greatest potential issues. Natural predators and heavy, beating rains may limit populations in some areas, but temperatures overall will be favorable for soybean aphid populations to locally increase. Growers located in or near a risk area are encouraged to regularly scout fields and monitor soybean aphid population dynamics, and also any treatment decisions that need to be made should be based on what is occurring in specific fields as populations can and will vary considerably even across adjacent fields, so while one field may need treatment the next may not.
